Dreaming of instant length, extra volume, or a new look for a special occasion? Hair extensions are the perfect way to transform your hair. While a professional can seamlessly apply permanent extensions, many of our customers want to know how to apply temporary ones at home.
At Angel Hair Extensions, we’re here to guide you. The most popular and user-friendly type for a DIY application is the clip-in hair extension. They offer instant results and can be removed just as easily. Follow this simple, step-by-step guide to mastering the art of applying your own hair extensions.
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need.
Your natural hair should also be clean, dry, and brushed to remove any knots. If you have fine hair, a volumising spray can help provide extra grip for the clips.
Using your comb, create a clean, horizontal part about one or two inches above the nape of your neck. This is where you’ll place your first weft of extensions. Secure the rest of your hair on top of your head using a hair clip.

This is a crucial step to prevent the extensions from slipping, especially if you have fine or silky hair. Gently backcomb or “tease” the hair along the part line you’ve created. This gives the clips something to grip onto. You can also spray a little bit of hairspray on the teased area for extra hold.
Take your first, and often widest, weft of extensions. Unclip all the clips. Align the weft with the part line you’ve just created and carefully push the clips into the teased hair. Snap the clips shut to secure the weft in place. Give it a gentle tug to ensure it’s firmly attached.
Release another section of your hair, about an inch or so above the last weft. Create another clean horizontal part and repeat the backcombing process. Place the next weft of extensions, following the same clipping technique. Continue this process, adding wefts as you move up your head towards the crown.
As you reach the sides of your head, you will use the smaller wefts. For a natural blend, it’s best to position these an inch or so above your ears. The goal is to fill in any gaps and ensure the extensions blend seamlessly with the hair around your face.
Once all the extensions are in, release your natural hair from the clip on top of your head. Use a wide-tooth comb or an extension-friendly brush to gently comb through your hair, blending the extensions with your natural hair. You can then style as usual with heat tools or simply leave them as they are. If your extensions are a different length, you may want to style them with a curl or wave to create a more cohesive and natural look.

With a little practice, you’ll be able to apply your hair extensions in no time. Our high-quality, Remy human hair extensions are designed to be styled and worn just like your own hair, giving you the freedom to create endless looks.
