How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

Whether you’re longing for waist-length, beachy summer waves or simply a thicker-looking ponytail, hair extensions offer an instant solution to all your hair concerns.

This is a popular question we get asked at Angel Hair Extensions and the answer may surprise you, depending on the type of hair extensions you have chosen which will take your regular hair to a glamourous new level. Hair extensions are the perfect way to add the length and fullness you have always desired.

Different Lifespans for Different Hair Extensions

1. Nano Ring Hair Extensions

Nano Rings are 90% smaller than regular hair extensions making them virtually undetectable. The hair is fitted behind strands of natural hair and clamped to secure. No heat or glue is used in the application.

Our Nano Ring hair extensions should last 6-9 months when cared for with regular appointments. You should book a maintenance appointment every 8 weeks, and the rings should be removed and new rings fitted, moving the extensions up to avoid detection. This will help your hair extensions last as long as possible and make sure they are kept in excellent condition.

2. Pre-bonded Hair Extensions

At Angel Hair Extensions, our Pre-bonded hair extensions are attached to the individual strands of natural hair. This makes your own hair appear fuller while maintaining your natural look.

Depending on how well you care for them, pre-bonded hair extensions should last an average of 4 to 5 months. As they are attached near to the root of your hair, care should be taken when washing and brushing them. The wrong technique or choice of extension brush could result in yanking on or wearing them out, leading to a shorter lifespan.

A regular hair routine, with the use of special aftercare products like conditioners and shampoos, is sufficient to make them last their full lifespan. You don’t need to have any maintenance with pre-bonded extensions, so you would just book in to have them professionally removed after 4-5 months.

3. Micro Ring Hair Extensions

Our Micro Ring hair extensions are applied by attaching individual strands of extensions to small natural hair sections. This method requires no use of glue or heat.

These extensions should last an average of 6-9 months depending on how well you treat them. Since they are attached close to your natural hairs’ roots, ensure you use only professional hair extension products to avoid damaging them near the scalp. The hair extension products should be the same as those used for the pre-bonded extensions. Repositioning of your micro ring extensions is required every 2 months.

4. Tape-In Hair Extensions

As the name suggests, tape-in extensions are taped into sandwich-like sections of your hair using adhesive tapes. They are preferred by a lot of people as they let the natural hair grow freely, and they also require no heat to attach.

Angel Hair Extensions Tape hair extensions typically require retaping after 4-8 weeks depending on how well you take care of them. If treated well, the same extensions can be reattached back for a fresher appearance.

An important care tip to bear in mind is to avoid brushing them when wet. After drying, you should brush through them gently using a special hair extension brush. This will help prevent them from breaking and maintain their natural look for longer.

5. LA Weave Hair Extensions

For our LA Weave hair extensions, the natural hair first has to be sectioned into rows with tracks of micro rings fitted. The extensions can then be sewn into the rows using a needle and threat. This type of extension works best for individuals with thicker and longer hair.

The typical maintenance time for LA Weave extensions is about 6-8 weeks, with a maximum recommended time of 9 months for a full weave. After this time it’s good to get brand new fresh hair.

For a longer lifespan, you should deeply condition and moisturize the weave at least once a week. To keep your natural hair healthy, ensure you use deep conditioning products on your own hair as well as the extensions.

Below are some extra tips for brushing your natural hair extensions:

  • You should brush your hair before washing it to prevent it from getting tangled up.
  • Avoid brushing the extensions when they are wet as they will be at their weakest. If necessary, be very gentle, working a comb up towards the tips, gently detangling as you go.
  • For a quicker morning process, brush your hair before going to bed to get rid of any entanglements from the day.

Hair extensions allow women and even men of all ages to easily transform and enhance their look. While it may not always be possible to grow your hair long or thick, hair extensions can help you achieve your desired look. Proper aftercare will make whichever extension type you choose to serve you the longest whilst keeping your natural hair nice and healthy.
